The Sioux City & Pembina Rail Road was first contracted from July 1st 1876 for 30 miles between Sioux City and Portlandville at $1,350 a year for a daily service excluding Sundays. The road was absorbed into the Illinois Central Rail Road by 1878 who extended it eastward to Fort Dodge giving a total route distance of 134 miles.
