(Valley Railroad) Pleasant Valley Depot, purple station cds overstruck by matching unlisted "Pleasant Valley, Valley Railroad" oval handstamp on 1¢ postal card (UX5) to Harrisbonburg Va., datelined "Pleasant Valley Va Oct 28 1878", Very Fine and rare unlisted Valley Railroad oval.

Chartered in February 1866 the Valley Railroad intended to connect the Baltimore & Ohio at Harpers Ferry to the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad. A section of the one between Harrisburg and Staunton was completed by 1877 using convict labor but by 1878 construction was stopped at Lexington. The line was taken over by the Baltimore & Ohio in 1881 as their Valley Branch but in the Postmaster General's Annual Report of 1878 neither company were listed as having a contract on the Harrison to Staunton section of the road.

Carried outside the mails 5 miles north having received the Station Agent cds and an unlisted undated "VALLEY RAILROAD" in the same ink.
