(Orange & Alexandria Railroad) Alex & Orange R.R., Apr 20, bold red route agent cds ties 3¢ dull red (11A) large margins to just in including part of adjoining stamp at left, also tied by pencil cancel, on orange buff cover to Philadelphia Pa.; edge wear with corner flaws, Fine and rare, Rarity VIII, ex-Towle, Hannen.
Towle No. 302-A-1    Estimate $400 - 600.

The Orange & Alexandria was chartered in March 1848 and reached Gordonsville in March 1854 being contracted for Route 2724 from January 1854. The 88-mile route was given $4,850 a year for a daily service.

Put onto Route 2724 on April 20th circa 1855 and carried to Alexandria for onward carriage via Washington and Baltimore to Philadelphia.
