The North Eastern Railroad was chartered December 16th 1851 and constructed largely through the efforts of the City of Charleston. It was completed to Florence S.C. in November 1856, and route agent service commenced in 1858. After the Civil War, different postmarks were used. This letter was addressed to Branchville, where the line divided into two segments to Hamburg and Columbia.
"Chelsea 10th Der 1858" dateline being the plantation of Morton A. Waring located 6½ miles from Monks Comer on Route 6168. Carried 29 miles south to Charleston.
