Oct 17" cds and matching open grid cancel tying faulty 3¢ rose (65) east to Washington Pa.; second with black "Hempfield R.R. Jan 25" cds with matching circular cancel ties 3¢ rose (65) to Fairmont W.V., carried east for transfer to the B&O to Fairmont, still Very Fine appearing and exceptionally rare railroad, Rarity X as Unique, both ex-Hannen, former also ex-Towle.Towle No. 293-I-1 Estimate $500 - 750.
Hempfield Railroad a little 32½ mile railroad that had but one route agent in service for Route 2649 opening once daily for $3,234 a year, commencing Oct. 1, 1858. It ran from Washington, Pa. to Wheeling, Va. and was notable only for reaching its western terminus via a tunnel beneath a cemetery.
