Virginia & Tennessee Rail Road, Lynchburg, Va., green embossed oval corner card on buff cover bearing 3¢ dull red (11A) four full to large margins, tied by "Lynchburg Va. Dec 10" cds to the University of Virginia, "Received, Dec. 12th 54" at left; some edge wear, F.-V.F. and scarce early railroad cameo advertising. Estimate $150 - 200.
The Virginia & Tennessee Railroad was chartered as the Lynchburg & Tennessee in 1848. The entire line from Lynchburg to Bristol was opened in 1856.
