A EXTREMELY RARE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5¢ ON 13¢ PROVISIONAL BEARING THE JACKSON MANUSCRIPT SURCHARGE.
There was a shortage of 5¢ stamp just after the transition from Postmaster Whitney to Jackson around the start of 1857. This necessitated the 5¢ provisional manuscript surcharge, with most being made by Jackson's clerk, Alvah Clark (Type I) having a numeral with a long flag, and the rest by Jackson (type II) having a numeral with short flag with only four examples recorded. New supplies of the 5¢ 1857 Issue (Scott 8) on thin white wove paper were received at the end of June 1857.
