1883 (May 10) Chicago Ill. to Sydney, New South Wales, forwarded to Melbourne, Victoria, legal-size cover bearing United States, 3¢ blue green (207), nine stamps and 10¢ brown (209), tied by grid cancels duplexed with "Chicago Ill., May 10" cds, San Francisco (5.16) transit backstamp, carried by City of New York transpacific, Sydney (7.7) arrival backstamp, forwarded to Melbourne paid by New South Wales, 6d Lilac (57) tied by "Sydney JY 7, 1883" cds, Melbourne (7.9) arrival backstamp; some wear, one 3¢ and 10¢ faulty, F.-V.F. and scarce mixed franking use, ex-Mercedes.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Cover with impressive franking overpaying by 1¢ three-times 12¢ treaty rate to New South Wales, although the UPU provided for free forwarding, Australia was not yet a member and therefore this forwarded cover required additional postage. The New South Wales 6d stamp paid three-times the 2d forwarding rate.
