(Indian Territory) "Ft. Sill I.T., Feby 9, manuscript postmark with matching cross-hatch canceling 3¢ ultramarine (114), faulty on 1870 cover to Walcott, Iowa, original letter from H.A. Gordon at Fort Sill back home datelined "February th 8th 1870, Fort Sill Indian Territory" with interesting content "…there is plenty of timber here and they have found a coal bank here their is no other settlement near this post and their is no farmers her no no place that is good for farming…but their is some talk of making a Railroad here only the indians is against it and the road is from Chicago to California and i do expect wee will have to fight the indians about it before the give up and wee got orders to be ready for action on or before the 11 of Aprile and i expect that it is either for the indians or Mormons that is at Salt lake city and you want to know whter the indians maidens or the Negors looks best for my part i do prefere the Indians for wee see some of them as white as lots of the whites but for my self i can only say that i do not fancy either of them…", Fine and early use from Fort Sill.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE 1869 ISSUE INDIAN TERRITORY USE.

The site of Fort Sill was staked out in January 1869 by Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan, who led a campaign into Indian Territory to stop hostile tribes from raiding border settlements in Texas and Kansas.
