1885, 1¢ Brown on Buff, Production Ink Sample, issued card with red manuscript "#5" in upper left, marked on face in black manuscript "Current printing Octo= 14/85" together with capital "A " in lower left corner, Very Fine and unique. Scott No. UX8PS. USPCC No. S7PSd $600.
This card was part of the production samples sent to the Postmaster General on October 15, 1885 that included #1 Morrill's, #2 Wode's 1, #3 Wode's 2, #4 Johnson's and this card #5 "Current Printing". Much difficulty was encountered with the ink used in producing this issue of cards, all of which had a tendency to clog the fine lines of the design and blur the finished product, thus requiring far too frequent washing of the plates. Brown was discontinued after only fifteen months.
