Confederacy, Point Lookout, Md. (Camp Hoffman), U.S. 1861, 3¢ rose (65) tied by target with matching "Point Lookout, Md., Mar 7" cds and Confederate "Due 10" with "Richmond, Va., Apr 25" cds on 1864 prisoner of war cover to Mrs. Martha A.S. Riggins, Prince Edward Co House, Virginia, full bold strike of the large oval J. N. Patterson approved examiner's handstamp (Harrison Type 1) (CSA Catalog type PWH-16 A), Richmond cds is Powell type 5g which is not recorded as being used until May 1864 and this predates that, endorsed "From Jno J. Riggins Company F 18th Regt Va Infty", Very Fine, exceptionally nice strike of this popular and scarce examined marking, ex-Tickell.

The 18th Va Infantry was part of Garnett's Brigade, Pickett's Division. John J. Riggins was captured at Gettysburg 3 July 1863 during Pickett's Charge. He was held at Point Lookout but was paroled about a month after this cover was mailed. He rejoined his regiment and was captured a second time as a POW at Saylor's Creek, Virginia on 6 April 1865 and once again confined at Point Lookout until his release on 17 June 1865.
