Confederacy, 8-Star Flag, red and blue design on cover to Lafayette, Va., "Winchester, Va., May 22, 1861" cds with matching rare "Paid 3" handstamp; slight toning and a couple small cover tears at top, F.-V.F., a very rare of the Winchester, Va. "Paid 3" handstamp on a patriotic cover. C.S.A. Catalog No. F8-5; $1,500 Estimate $750 - 1,000.
Winchester was out of stamps and used the "Paid 3" as Confederate use of the U.S. rate prior to the assumption of control by the Confederate Post Office on June 1, 1861.
