1917, 5¢ carmine error, imperf, o.g., never hinged, enormous even margins encompassing significant portions of adjacent stamp all around, rich color and immaculate freshness, a Superb gem, one of three examples to receive this ultimate grade; with 2005 P.S.E. Graded certificate (Gem 100J, SMQ $40,000). Scott No. 485 $14,000.
A WONDERFUL GEM EXAMPLE OF THE 1917 5¢ CARMINE ERROR OF COLOR IN IMPERFORATE FORMAT.
While producing the 2¢ plate "7942", during one of the inspections it was noted that three positions in the plate were not satisfactory and needed to be burnished out and re-entered. The transfer roll for the 5¢ stamp was mistakenly used with the error passing through production unnoticed, with the error sheets released in perf. 10 (467), perf. 11. (505) and a limited number imperf. (485).
