Flo., "July 25", clear strike of fancy oval postmark and manuscript date with matching "18¾" cent rating on 1833 folded letter to Charleston S.C., interesting letter in regards to politics, waiting for the weekly mails, description of the city, exploring the old fort where Genl Gadsden was imprisoned, "the Engineers are now repairing the old fort, a cell which had been bricked up was opened and the cruel spectacle was present - a man or rather skeleton in chains was found, some poor wretch who had been entombed alive, the victim of Spanish revenge or superstition", also "Nullification must be the doctrine of the whole South - our very existence as a slave holding people is involved" etc., light toning, Very Fine.
