Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ blue, Archer & Daly printing, horizontal pair, tied by blue "Raleigh N.C. Apr 18, 1864" cds to Capt. Co. G. 44th N.C., care of Adjt. & Inspector Gen. Cooper C.S.A., Richmond Va., endorsed "Official Business", inside use with 5¢ blue (7) four margin pair tied by "Ashboro N.C. Apr 28" cds to Sarah A. Tillinghast, Fayettesville N.C., endorsed underneath pair by Capt. Robert Bingham, Very Fine and scarce official turned use. Scott No. 7 Estimate $300 - 400.
Robert Bingham (1838-1927) was a Captain in Company G 44th Regiment of the N.C. Vols (McRae's Brigade) Heth's Division, A.P. Hills Corps in the Army of Northern Va. Capt. Brigham was captured at South Santa Anna Bridge on June 26th 1863 and held as prisoner of war at Johnsons Island, Fort Delaware, and Point Lockout, from which he was pardoned and sent to City Point Va. for exchange on April 22nd 1864. He must have received this letter the same day and due to the shortage of paper, turned and reused.
