(Marion) Salem, Ogn., Aug 18, balloon cds (Whittlesey 3, R A) and handstamped "5" rate marking struck twice on stampless cover with "State Department, Oregon Territory, Secretary" imprint, Stark correspondence to Portland Oregon, accompanied by original 1853 legal letter signed by Secretary of Oregon Territory Geo. L. Curry, cover with minor corner wear and light edge toning, Very Fine.

George L. Curry was a newspaperman who emigrated to the Oregon Country in 1846. He settled in Oregon City and became active in politics. Curry served as Secretary of Oregon Territory and also twice as Acting Governor of Oregon Territory in 1853 and 1854. He was officially appointed Governor of Oregon Territory in 1854 and remained in that office until statehood in 1859.
