(Linn) Scio, Or'n., Jan 22, very clear cds (Whittlesey 2, R 5) on registered cover from the H.B. Shaw correspondence to Maine, three-color franking includes 1861-67 3¢ rose with grill, 1863-67 2¢ black with grill, and 1861-67 10¢ green with grill (s.e. at right) together paying the 15¢ registry fee plus second 1861-67 3¢ rose with grill paying the postage, all stamps cancelled by matching pen strokes with the 10¢ and second 3¢ stamps also tied by target cancels, additional strike of the cds extends under the 2¢ stamp indicating the sender probably decided on registration as an afterthought, appropriate "Reg. No. 2" endorsement at upper left (so the second registered letter send from the Post Office in the first quarter of the year, probably 1869 or 1870), "$10.00" annotation suggests that amount was once enclosed, Extremely Fine, An Exceptional Western Blackjack Cover.
