Nevada Col Ter., crude dateless balloon handstamp tying defective 3¢ dull red (26) on 1861 cover to New York, manuscript "Sept 23" date alongside; some cover wear and staining, front mostly separated from back, F.-V.F. and rare, Illustrated in Jarrett's Colorado book., ex-Persson. Estimate $500 - 750.
This is generally regarded as the most spectacular of all Colorado territorial postmarks. It was carved for, or possibly by, the postmaster, John J. Ratliff. The stamp would be demonetized in Colorado December 1.
