John D. Spreckels was owner of the Oceanic Steamship Company and son of Claus Spreckels. J.D. Spreckels and Brothers acted as general agents for Pacific visitors with "Splendid American Steamers" of the Oceanic Steamship Company that left San Francisco every four weeks bound for the "Milky Way of the Ocean" that included Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti and Rarotonga.
