New York Foreign Mail Cancels - Grids & Wedges

Circular Radial, two clear strikes tie 2¢ red brown (146), horizontal pair, well centered, on circa June 5, 1872 piece, endorsed "Steamer Nevada via England", red London (6.17.72) transit, Calais (6.18) entry cds also ties pair, Bordeaux (2.19) arrival cds, Very Fine and scarce cancel.

The 4¢ prepaid the 15 grams British open mail rate to France. This letter was carried by the Guion Line "Nevada" that departed New York on June 5, 1872. While enroute to Queenstown, Ireland the vessel ran aground in fog half a mile east of Roche's Point. The Nevada's mail was landed at Queenstown on June 16th. The "Nevada" was refloated and arrived June 18th.
