New York Foreign Mail Cancels - Grids & Wedges

Lot 738

"Flying Clothespins", two strikes tie two 2¢ red brown (146) singles, along with four 3¢ green (147) singles, tied by red "New York 'Paid 6' Mar 30" exchange cds, on blue 1872 folded letter to France, additional cds below, light London transit and oval "PD" handstamp, Calais (4.11.72) entry cds, Angouleme (4.11) arrival cds; some aging, Fine.
Weiss No. TR-C7    Estimate $300 - 400.

A VERY UNUSUAL NYFM USE WITH STAMPS CANCELLED BY TWO DIFFERENT DEVICES.

This cover is discussed in an article by Roger Curran in the February 2009 USCC News. It shows how postal clerks handled mail in the Foreign Mail Department, the 2¢ stamps were cancelled first, and then the exchange office c.d.s. applied later when dispatched. The 16¢ postage prepays the second weight progression for 10-15 grams.

Realized: $210
