1849 (Aug. 2) Brooklyn N.Y. to Dublin, Ireland, blue folded letter datelined "Red Hook N.Y., Augt. 2nd '49" and bearing U.S. Mail, 1¢ black on pink (6LB9), four wide margins, tied by pencil and New York "5" in circle handstamp, carried as endorsed by Cunard Europa from New York Aug. 8th to Liverpool arriving Aug. 20th, Liverpool 'America' (8.20) backstamp and "1/-" shilling due rating handstamp, red London (8.21) cds, Very Fine.Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.
AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE U.S. CITY DESPATCH POST CARRIER STAMP ON TRANSATLANTIC MAIL.
The U.S. City Despatch Post was authorized by the New York postmaster to carry mail to he post office from locations in the city. The carrier delivered the letter to the New York post office, which then dispatched it on the next eastbound Cunard ship. The British Post Office treated it as unpaid and collected the 1s treaty rate. The 5¢ oval handstamp is used as an exchange debit marking for 5¢ debit to G.B.
