Postmaster's Provisionals

Lot 1764

Confederacy, Charleston, S.C., 1861, 5¢ blue, Type J, irregular margins showing parts of framelines to in, tied by "Charleston S.C. Jun 19 1862" cds on cover with red and blue 8-Star Confederate Flag patriotic design (CSA type F8-unlisted, same as F7-19 with Liberty cap except added star at center) to Pleasant Lane S.C., some toning and wrinkling, Fine.
Scott No. 16X1    $11,500.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF A CHARLESTON POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL USED ON A PATRIOTIC COVER.

This late use of the Charleston postmaster provisional stamp was used just 11 days prior to the general postage rate increase to a standard 10¢ regardless of distance. Apparently due to a temporary shortage of Confederate stamps in Charleston at this time, Postmaster Huger brought out supplies of the now obsolete provisionals and placed them on sale. Other June 1862 usages are recorded including the Jun. 20th example offered in our Sale 59 lot 4247 of the Karrer collection.

Realized: $3,250
