Lot 1758

Confederacy, South Carolina Palmetto State Flag, blue patriotic design on circa 1861 orange buff cover to Hartford Conn., red "Boston Mass, Oct 22" cds and bearing 3¢ rose (65), faulty, just tied by "Paid" framed handstamp, Fine.
C.S.A. Catalog No. FSC-4    $5,000.

A VERY RARE CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC DESIGN USED IN THE NORTH.

This cover is part of a known correspondence to John Wyman, the ventriloquist, and his wife Jane in Hartford Conn. using patriotic covers during the Civil War. It is quite extensive, perhaps numbering over one hundred, but this one is unusual since its subject is the flag of a Confederate state. As an indication of rarity, this Palmetto State flag design is listed in the new C.S.A. catalog with a black and white image only.

Realized: $850
