Wells Fargo & Co., Sacramento, blue oval handstamp on fresh 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco, with Blue Coast Frank printed at upper left, Very Fine and rare, this is the Only Recorded Example of a Blue Frank Printed At the Upper Left of an Entire, ex Metkin. Estimate $500 - 750.
It is speculated that the blue frank designated special carriage on the Sacramento River steamboats, because Wells Fargo's handstamped "Steamboat" markings cease to appear at just the time when the blue franks come into use.
