A RARE CHARLESTON PENNY POST USE DURING THE CONFEDERATE PERIOD.
The Charleston Penny Post was an official U.S. Post Office service beginning in 1849, which is believed to have continued on a reduced scale following the outbreak of hostilities in 1861. Although wartime fees are unknown, this service cost 2¢ previously. Persons using this service normally added a street number and endorsed the cover "Penny Post".
