Confederate 1863 Regular Issues Used in Charleston

Lot 4292 ()

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ greenish blue, strip of four, huge to full margins, tied by two strikes of blue "Charleston 'Paid' Feb 3" cds on back of cover front, Very Fine and attractive use.
Scott No. 11c    Estimate $300 - 400.

This is the listing example of the Type IV 1850s postmark used during the Civil War. On this date, the Charleston Post Office must have pressed into service an old blue ink pad unused since 1855. It is also the only recorded use of the old blue ink at Charleston during the Confederate period. We may be surmise that just prior to the city's evacuation on February 17-18, that short lived emergency measures were undertaken.
