Charleston Postmasters' Provisionals

Lot 4254

Confederacy, Charleston, S.C., 1861, 10¢ black, cut square, clear strike of handstamp on piece, partial "Hardeeville S.C. Aug 27 1863" cds and bold "Due 10" arc rating handstamp (CSA type B), Very Fine.
Scott No. 16XU7    $3,000.

THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE CHARLESTON PALMETTO TREE 10¢ BLACK PROVISIONAL HANDSTAMP.

This 10¢ handstamped use was apparently from a soldier stationed in Hardeeville, which was on the railroad to Savannah. Apparently, the Charleston provisional handstamp was not recognized at Hardeeville and their "Due 10" handstamp was applied, which is not a style employed at Charleston. The only other recorded example of the Charleston Palmetto Flag 10¢ provisional entire is the unique press printed Scott 16XU6 that catalogs $80,000.

Realized: $950
