Confederacy, Charleston, S.C., 1861, 5¢ blue on buff, cancelled by "Charleston S.C. Aug 16 1861" and addressed to Laurens S.C.; top edge repaired and two flaps replaced, Very Fine appearance, ex-Kohn, Stonewall.

THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE OF A CHARLESTON C.S.A. PROVISIONAL.

In August 1861, Charleston Postmaster Huger ordered stamped envelopes from Walker, Evans & Co. These envelopes, on various colors of paper, were prepared from a woodcut similar in design to an ornamental oval used on the adhesives issued a short time afterwards. It was reported that the envelopes were placed on sale on August 15th 1861, only one day prior to this usage..
