New York, N.Y., U.S. City Despatch Post, 1842-45, 3¢ black on blue, deeply blued paper, four large margins, cancelled by red "US" framed handstamp on folded letter to Charleston S.C., red "New-York May 12" cds and blue manuscript "25" rating ties stamp; corner creasing top right, small pre-use tear, Very Fine appearance; with 1974 P.F. certificate.

This was the first stamp issued by authority of the Post Office Department. The U.S. City Despatch Post was run by the P.O. Dept. in New York City from Aug. 1842 to Nov. 1846.
