South Carolina Railroad, Office of the General Superintendent, Charleston S.C., all-over illustrated shaded ad cover showing steam locomotive bearing 3¢ dull red (26), cancelled by black grid cancel and addressed to New York N.Y., matching bold "Charleston S.C. Nov 5" cds, Extremely Fine.

The South Carolina Railroad was chartered December 10th 1827 as Charleston & Hamburg R.R., initial 6 miles completed in 1829, and the first U.S. mails carried by rail on December 1st 1831. Line completed to Hamburg in October 1833, and branches to Columbia in 1840 and Camden in September 1848. As the railroad post system grew in sophistication, several datestamps were procured along with ratemarks and cancels.
