(Naval) U.S. Naval Lyceum (Brooklyn N.Y.), from the John Sewall correspondence addressed to U.S. Ship Saratoga, East India Squadron via Naval Lyceum New York buff cover bearing 1852, 3¢ dull red (11A), four margins, couple small faults, just tied by light blue circular grid cancel, matching blue "Winthrop Me. Mar 18" cds at left, forwarded with Brooklyn "U.S. Naval Lyceum" handstamp depicting full-rigged ship, receipt docketing "Rec'd Hong Kong Jan. 5, 1853 / by (Coal Ship) Gertrude / Macao", photocopy of part of original letter accompanies; minor top corner strengthening, Very Fine.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE BROOKLYN NAVAL LYCEUM USE IN COMBINATION WITH THE 3¢ 1851 ISSUE TO HONG KONG.

John S. Sewall was the Captain's Clerk on the U.S.S. Saratoga that was part of the Japan Expedition as part of Perry's East India Squadron. Sewall later wrote a book, "The Ship's Log of the Captain's Clerk: Adventures in the China Seas", about his experiences aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga. Another cover from this same correspondence dated Mar. 23rd 1852 from Brunswick Me. bearing a 3¢ orange brown #10A that was forwarded on the same Coal Ship "Gertrude" into Macao (ex-Spicer). Transit time was 10 months.
