Cal., perfect bold strike of fancy box handstamp in green on small 1855 cover addressed to Freeport Me. bearing 10¢ green, type III (15), four margins, tied by bold "San Francisco Cal 5 Sep" cds, carried on day of posting by the Oregon to Panama arriving Sep. 21st, transferred to the George Law leaving Aspinwall on Sep. 23rd and arriving into New York Oct. 2nd, docketed "Sept. 1855"; some slight staining, Very Fine; with 1986 P.F. certificate. Estimate $1,500 - 2,000.
The 55 mile Panama Rail Road had been completed in January 1855 reducing the transit time to a day.
