The Pacific Mail Steam Ship Company operated fleets on both the west coast and east coast routes for their contracts for the San Francisco to New York mails. Although the contract ended in 1869, the PMSSC continued to use the steamships for the trans-Panama business with South America. The "Henry Chauncey" of 2,656 tons was built by William H. Webb's yard at New York in 1864 and entered service on the New York to Aspinwall route in November 1865.
