(Sunflower River) Sunflower River Packet News Boy, blue cds on 3¢ pink entire (U58) from the Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., indicia cancelled by manuscript "X"; usual filing holes, Very Fine.Milgram No. 996 Estimate $100 - 150.
Prior to the Civil War routes were contracted from Vicksburg on the Yazoo River and its tributary, the Sunflower, to McNutt. The route was not reinstated after the Civil War although boats continued to carry letters on the route.
The "News Boy" of 115 tons built at Brownsville, Pennsylvania in 1859 for the Red River trade. Capt. Allen Fowler and others bought her in February 1862 and although stated by "Way's Packet Directory" to have gone to the Attakapas River trade after the war, she clearly also ran north on the Mississippi to the Sunflower River.
