The New Orleans to Shreveport Route 7702 was contracted by the trip at $25 a roundtrip between July 1855 and May 1861 with three times a week service "when roads were unsuitable for stage coaches". One of the steamboats contracted on the 670 mile route was the "Robert Watson" with Captain John Smoker as her Master.
This cover was carried on the Red River route 7702 to Shreveport, and then 90 miles by post road to Boston or possibly further up the Red River to Ogden for transfer by road.
