After the Civil War, the contracted mail route reverted to the post road along the Red River. This was still a slow route relative to steamboats and many letters continued to be carried outside the posts on the Red River. The "St. Nicholas" was put onto the Red River trade in April 1866 and sank at Natchitoches on December 23rd 1868.
