Steamboat owners and Masters used agents and forwarders in major ports and landings. Snapp Hite (later George D. Hite & Co.) operated in New Orleans in the 1850s.
The "Bluff City" of 252 tons was built at Louisville in 1854 for the New Orleans to Memphis trade. She was lost on the Yazoo River in 1859.
