Steamer Louis D'Or, neat oval handstamp cancels 3¢ red Nesbitt buff entire from Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., endorsed "per Louis D'Or", usual filing hole; accompanied by Steamer Louis D'Or, Feb. 2nd 1861 passenger fare receipt for Henry Marston and Negroes from Port Hudson probably to New Orleans, this was 24 days after Secession of Mississippi from the Union, a Very Fine pair.
Milgram No. 812    Estimate $400 - 600.

Marston owned plantations on the Mississippi River and the Clinton Bank. A native of Massachusetts and opposed to slavery, he may have been trying to help escaped slaves. The "Louis D'Or" was a 343 ton steamboat built in 1860.
