Lincoln, Abraham, (1809-1865) 16th President of the United States, 1861-1865. Clear full "A. Lincoln" free frank signature as President on ca. 1864 legal size cover addressed in his hand to "Major General Hurlbut, New Orleans, Louisiana", additionally endorsed "Private" at top, blurry yet discernible strike of "Washington, D.C., Free" cds, Very Fine; with photocopy of 1967 G.T. Banks signature attest.

Major General Stephen A. Hurlbut led a corps under William T. Sherman in the 1864 Meridian expedition. Hurlbut subsequently commanded the Department of the Gulf, succeeding Nathaniel P. Banks and serving in that capacity from 1864 to 1865 when he was mustered out. This letter was most certainly written while Hurlbut was in command.
