The first Auditor was a post set up in 1776 by Continental Congress to help handle claims against Congress. By 1782, when the post had been given the franking privilege, the office had grown to be one of the most important in the Treasury Dept. There was only the Auditor until 1817, when four more auditors were added with specific assignments: 2nd and 3rd handled Army accounts, 4th handled Navy and 5th State, with the 1st Auditor handling everything else. In 1836, the 6th Auditor post was created to handle Post Office accounts.
