Hawaii, 1863, 1¢ black on grayish, "1" with intact top serif, plate 4-A, type IV, position 4, without gum, ample to large margins, faint mark at lower right, otherwise Very Fine, a lovely example of this extremely rare variety. Scott No. 15 $650 for normal.
This variety is noted in Westerberg "Plating the Hawaiian Numerals" with only one single and another in a block of 8 being the only recorded examples at that time. Another example was offered in the Advertiser Collection however the variety was not identified. The scarcity of type IV with the top serif indicates that the serif broke off during an early stage in printing.
