Confederacy, 1861-62 Ashfield, N.C. Correspondence To Surgeon, group of three covers, one folded letter and three letters, from wife to her husband W.L. Hilliard M.D. Surgeon in 9th N.C. Regt. of the 1st N.C. Cavalry, covers sent to Centerville Va. (Dec 18, 1861), Paid 5 to Manassas (Feb. 3), Paid 10 to Knoxville Tenn. (May 16), and Kingston N.C. (undated); some interesting letter content; two covers are faulty, some interesting content such as Feb. 13th letter: "We are all feeling so sad from the unwelcome news - the face of Fort Henry and the capture of so many of our brave soldiers at Roanoke Island. The cloud of our political troubles grows darker and more portentous every day…will deliver us from the cruel wrath of our enemies. We must trust in the righteousness of our cause, and in the help of the All-Mighty. I feel so glad that Gen. Beauregard has been transferred to Ky. The aspect of things will certainly change under his generalship…"; Fine, An important correspondence from Ashfield.
