Freight Money Letters by City of Origin (Auburn, N.Y. to New Orleans, La.)

1845 (Apr. 12) Hartford, Ct. to Paris, France redirected to Milan, Lombardy-Venetia, folded letter with distinctive pointing hand "Paid" handstamp in red of Hartford, the freight money fee of 25¢ and the inland fee of 12½¢ must have been paid at Hartford, although not marked on letter, carried by Great Western on 36th return from New York Apr. 24 to Liverpool arriving May 8, Liverpool Ship (5.9) and red London (5.10) backstamps, matching red "Colonies/&.Art. 12" framed h.s., red French entry cds with manuscript "15" decimes due rating, forwarded to Milan with "41" crazie due rating, Milan (5.17) arrival backstamp, F.-V.F., Only recorded freight money cover from Hartford.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

London marked red, boxed COLONIES/&cART.12. accountancy marking to show that letter was unpaid and sent to France under letter bill accounting article 12, which required France pay U.K. 3 shilling 4 pence per 30 grams of bulk letter weight. Paris marked letter for 15 decimes postage due, 10 decimes payback to U.K. and 5 decimes French internal postage. Letter redirected to Milan, where it was marked for 41 krCM postage due.
