Freight Money Letters by City of Origin (Auburn, N.Y. to New Orleans, La.)

1846 (Jun. 5) Baltimore, Md. to Geneva, Switzerland via Liverpool, buff cover with blue "Baltimore Md. Jun 5" cds and matching "Paid" h.s. with manuscript "5" inland and "25" freight money ratings, carried by Great Western S.S. Co. Great Britain from New York Jun. 8 to Liverpool arriving Jun. 22, red Liverpool (6.22) and London (6.23) transits with matching oval "PD" h.s., manuscript "11" rating, red Boulogne (6.25) entry cds, Very Fine, a scarce freight money usage to Switzerland.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Letter prepaid 5¢ inland fee to New York plus 25¢ freight money fee for a steamship. Brown Shipley & Company of Liverpool, acting as forwarding agents, paid the 8 pence incoming ship letter fee in Liverpool and reposted letter to Geneva, paying the 11 pence charge for mails via France (5d transit to France and 6d transit to Switzerland.
