Freight Money Letters by City of Origin (Auburn, N.Y. to New Orleans, La.)

1842 (Jun. 4) Baltimore, Md. to Cognac, France, folded letter with blue "Baltimore Md. Jun 4" cds and matching "Paid" h.s. with blue manuscript "37½" rating for 2x 18¾¢ inland postage and "50" rating for 2x 25¢ steamship freight money fee, carried by British Queen under Belgian flag from New York Jun. 7 to Southampton arriving Jun. 23, red London (6.23) cds and matching "Ship Letter" backstamps, manuscript "8" due rating for ship letter fee and "1/6" U.K. debit to France, red Calais (6.25) entry cds and manuscript "39" decimes due rating, Cognac (6.27) arrival backstamp, clean and Very Fine, Carried on the maiden return voyage of the British Queen under the Belgian flag, one of only two known freight money letters carried under Belgian flag.

London foreign office debited France 1s6d (8d ship fee plus 10d to France). Paris marked 39 decimes postage due, 18 decimes to U.K. plus 21 decimes for 7½ gram letter going 600km from Calais to Cognac.
