Transatlantic Mail to and from Portugal

1850 (Oct. 18) Lisbon, Portugal to New York, N.Y., folded letter carried privately to London, entered mails with (10.29) crown cds and unusual "3" cent debit h.s. to U.S., carried by Collins Line America from Liverpool Oct. 30 to New York arriving Nov. 12, New York "24" cent due h.s., Extremely Fine, This is the only recorded example of this "3" debit handstamp used on a transatlantic cover.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter carried "out of the mails" to London where it was posted unpaid to U.S. London used unusual "3" handstamp to indicate G.B. debit to U.S.
