Transatlantic Mail from Mexico

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Sep. 15) Tampico, Mexico to London, England via New Orleans La., folded cover with red "Forwarded by Schmidt & Co., New Orleans" backstamp, entered mails with "New Orleans La. Sep 29" cds and matching "Paid" and "34" rating h.s. for 10¢ postage plus 24¢ packet fee, carried by Cunard Line America from New York Oct. 11 to Liverpool arriving Oct. 23, red London (10.24) arrival backstamp and manuscript "1/" shilling due rating, Very Fine and interesting retaliatory use from Mexico.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter carried privately to New Orleans on the RMSC steamer "Trent" from Tampico to Cat Island, then posted by forwarding agent Schmidt & Co. of New Orleans to London. Letter carried on 15th of 26 Cunard mail voyages to the England under the retaliatory order.
