Transatlantic Mail to Italy

1857 (Dec. 4) Baltimore, Md. to Florence, Italy, folded letter with blue "Baltimore Md. Dec 4 1857" cds with red "Paid" h.s. and red crayon "35" cent rating for single rate, red "New-York Am. Pkt. Dec 5" exchange cds and matching "12" credit to Prussia, carried on Collins Line Atlantic from New York Dec. 5 to Liverpool arriving Dec. 16, red Aachen (12.18) framed h.s. and red manuscript "fr 2", Florence (12.24) arrival backstamp; Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter was carried on the last mail voyage of the "Atlantic" for the Collins Line and the next to last voyage for the line which ceased operations in February 1858. Aachen marked "fr 2" in magenta ink to show that 2 silbergroschen (approximately 5¢) had been paid for transit fees beyond the German-Austrian Postal Union.
