Transatlantic Mail to Italy

1855 (Jan. 16) New York, N.Y. to Livorno, Tuscany, folded letter with red "New-York Br. Pkt. Jan 16" exchange cds and pencil "35" prepaid rating, New York large red "12" cent credit h.s. to Prussia, carried by Cunard Line Asia from Boston Jan. 17 to Liverpool arriving Jan. 30, red Aachen (2.2) backstamp and matching "Franco" h.s., Livorno (2.8) arrival backstamp and manuscript "12" crazie due h.s., Very Fine and attractive.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The 35¢ prepayment for the PCM rate was hastily marked in pencil across center of letter. New York used large "12" handstamp to show credit to Prussia. Aachen marked 2 silbergroschen in bright blue ink to show that postage beyond the German-Austrian Postal Union was paid; however, this did not pay the postage to the Tuscany destination.
